PUGweb sample database

Introduction

The idea behind the database is to have enough realistic records to show a wide variety of family circumstances over several generations, and sufficient to produce fully populated trees and reports. The Royalty database is designed to accompany the Peditree tutorial and the details held are not typical of more ordinary families. The Elton databases provided by Murray hold very few records with incomplete data; their purpose is to make available the most recent picture scripts.

What use is it?

  • to illustrate different ways of using some of the fields available to us in the standard database.
  • to provide a database that can be used to experiment with any changes you'd like, especially if you've not made changes before. It'll feel safer than using your own data and can be restored to the original easily.
  • if you can't quite see how to make the change you want, or how to do something in Peditree, you can refer to the data when asking for help on PUG-l, as others can see exactly the same information.
  • it should make problem description and resolution easier if bugs or oddities can be reproduced using shared data as well as your own larger database.

How do I get it?

There is one zip file for you to download from PUGWeb. It includes a GEDCOM file, which holds all the data, and the pictures which accompany the database. Unless you change the destination, the GEDCOM will unzip into \pedigree and the pictures into \pedigree\sampledb\pics on your current drive. You can of course move them around later if you wish.

The full procedure is this

  1. Decide where you want the sample database to live on your computer; for example, it could be with all your other databases or elsewhere, in your \pedigree folder or pehaps in \peditree.
  2. Download from PUGWeb the zip file (and save it to disk) - download SampleDB.zip now.
  3. If you don't have a recent version of Murray's ELTON55 database you should download this, too. (Look under Database Designs and choose the most recent; database Elton55.ped will be created by following the instructions.) This is all you need from PUGWeb.
  4. Unzip the file SampleDB.zip to your chosen location. (As mentioned above, the default is \pedigree).
  5. Start Peditree (or Pedigree if you insist!) and open database Elton55.
  6. Create a new database: File > New DB. Name it and, when asked, choose to keep the index keys. The new database will be created and you see a blank family display.
  7. Now import the downloaded GEDCOM file: File > Import > GEDCOM. Navigate to where you saved SampleDB.ged, select it and click open.
  8. The data will be imported into your empty database, which is now ready to use.

Acknowledgements

I would like to record my thanks to David Anderson and Paul Stevenson who generously allowed me use their hard-won data. Please note, however, that I have changed all the surnames, so there are no links to be found here to your ancestors.
